The NH Alliance for Healthy Aging (NHAHA) strives to strengthen support for family caregivers across New Hampshire, improving their well-being and the care they provide every day. The workgroup creates connections between caregivers, resources, and the systems that support them.

The Vital Role of Family Caregivers in New Hampshire

Families, friends, and neighbors serve as the backbone of the long-term care system in New Hampshire. Caregivers provide support to older adults through a variety of tasks including hands-on care, providing transportation to medical & dental, grocery shopping, and performing household tasks.

It is estimated that there are more than 281,000 caregivers in New Hampshire and each year they provide more than $2.8 billion in unpaid care and supportive services for loved ones. The experience of caregiving is often complex. While rewardingthe caregiving journey can simultaneously feel physicallyemotionally, and financially exhausting.

NHAHA Caregiving Priorities

The work of this group has culminated across three strategy areas:

Strategy 1: Increase caregiver-friendly workplaces.

The workgroup has developed an outreach plan to engage businesses on the importance of caregiver-friendly employment strategies. This outreach plan includes providing education and awareness on how employers can support caregivers in the workplace, the return on investment of providing caregiver-friendly business practices, and resources for both small and large businesses.

Strategy in Action: The workgroup has hosted several outreach events, including a Forum on the Future meeting and a webinar about caregiver-friendly business practices.

Strategy 2: Increase caregiver self-identification and awareness.

The workgroup has prioritized helping individuals recognize their caregiving roles and understand the supports available to them that can improve their well-being and confidence in their role.

Strategy in Action: The workgroup created a caregiver self-identification flyer that outlines typical caregiving tasks and available resources. The workgroup is working to disseminate the flyer through partnering with various organizations across the state including New Hampshire Medical Society, Municipality Association, Aging and Disability Resource Center, AARP, and many others.

Strategy 3: Act as a convener on caregiving issues.

The workgroup brings together partners and stakeholders to foster collaboration and shared understanding.

Strategy in Action: The workgroup hosts a quarterly Coffee and Caregiving Conversations which convenes service providers and professionals that support family caregivers. Participants share information and resources, reduce duplication of efforts, identify gaps in services and align current work.
